Documentary Wedding Photography – Best of 2012

I always say that documentary wedding photography is the telling of a story and what a story 2012 has been. The country has been gripped by sports fever which generated a great positive vibe throughout the year. Unfortunately it has also been a year of the most insane weather, meaning I have shot 4 weddings in the snow and spent every week nervously checking the weekends forecast to see what was going to be in store. A certain amount of luck meant that only a single wedding was a complete washout weather wise, every other one we were graced with at least a little bit of sunshine.

All in all, as far as the photography goes, this has easily been my best year ever. As ever I have had nothing but really fantastic couples to work with, which makes my job an absolute joy. I’ve been to some stunning new venues, from the likes of the breathtaking Sherborne Abbey and the gorgeous Beaumont Estate in Windsor to the incredibly cool Ham Polo Club, as well as revisiting some old favourites such as Warren House in Kingston. I’ve shot everything from Russian Orthodox Weddings with a Nigerian twist to Chinese Tea Ceremonies. Variety is the spice of life, as they say, and this year has certainly not been short of it!

Rather than just choose my absolute favourite images from the year, I’ve tried highlight the way that documentary wedding photography can tell a story and have done so with a mix from all my weddings this year. What I hadn’t anticipated was quite how difficult it would be to narrow down such a wonderful year, I could have easily trebled the length of the slideshow! Hopefully it gives an idea of how I cover a day, I like to step back and really minimise the level of intrusion, observing and capturing moments of emotion and interaction between people.

The slideshow is about 10 minutes long, so grab a coffee (or a glass of wine, after all, it is New Years Eve), sit back and enjoy my summary of the past 12 months. If 2013 is half as good as 2012 I am going to have a superb year ahead!
